What Is The Role Of A Security Guard?

You will have seen them at your local supermarket, in the nearest shopping centre, and located on construction sites. Security guards serve a vital role in the country to protect from theft, damage, and destruction.  For many, they are seen as a useful addition to protecting public safety, and from major retailers, a great way to deter people from shoplifting. So, what exactly is the role of a security guard?

To Protect Property & Products

For the most part, the role of a security guard is to protect property and products at the location in which they are based. In supermarkets, you will often find them near the entrance and exit, where they monitor CCTV for potential shoplifters. You may also see them patrolling public car parks at night, and guarding construction sites against theft and vandalism.  The best way to see their position is as the locations own hired police force, who are there to catch and hold those who are caught committing a crime on the property.

To Protect The Public

You may think they are purely employed to prevent the stock from going missing, but a security guard is also there to keep the public safe. Be it by removing drunk visitors, argumentative teenagers, or those causing mischief, a security guard can deal with them quickly. They also give a sense of security to shoppers, who feel better protected knowing that there are trained security guards keeping the premises free from trouble.

To Enforce Rules

As security guards are employed to work on private property, they are given a set of rules to enforce. These can range from stopping people using bikes and scooters on the premises, to removing hats and sunglasses. It may seem like a waste of time enforcing such rules as these, but they all work together to create a safer and more pleasant atmosphere for everyone. They also act as a preventative measure for avoiding theft and trouble, as those who maybe have the aim to shoplift will be put off when they notice a security guard in the building.

Their role may seem small and often go unnoticed, but the service they provide to both stores and the public is vital and help prevent many crimes each day. Without them, there would be an increase of product theft and more unruly behaviour than with them.  They reduce crime, protect the public, and make shopping a much better experience.
